About

Why we started this site

Fewer than 4 in 100 Americans over 50 have long-term care insurance, yet federal estimates suggest about 70% of people 65 and older will need some form of long-term care before they die. Most people don’t learn how big that gap is until a parent has a fall, a diagnosis, or a hospital stay — and suddenly an adult child is trying to understand elimination periods, waiting periods, and Medicaid spend-down rules in the middle of a crisis, often while still raising their own kids.

We started SandwichGen Planning because that information shouldn’t be this scattered or this confusing. Most of what’s written about long-term care insurance is aimed at insurance professionals or buried in dense policy language. We wanted a site written for the people actually living this: someone in their 50s or 60s planning for their own future, and the “sandwich generation” adult children trying to figure out what’s best for a parent — before a crisis forces the decision.

What you’ll find here

We cover long-term care insurance from both angles: straightforward guides on cost, coverage, and whether a policy is worth it for your own situation, alongside content written specifically for family caregivers — how to start the conversation with a parent, what the warning signs look like, and what options exist (Medicaid, HSAs, reverse mortgages, hybrid life/LTC policies) when a traditional policy isn’t the right fit or isn’t available anymore. We also track how the traditional LTC insurance market has changed — many carriers have exited the space and premiums have risen sharply — so we cover hybrid and alternative products honestly, not just the products that were common a decade ago.

How we create our content

We use AI-assisted research and writing tools to help us cover this topic thoroughly, and every article is reviewed and edited by our editorial team before publishing. We verify premium figures, coverage details, and program rules against original sources — insurer materials, AALTCI data, and government resources like Medicaid.gov — and we update articles when pricing or policy information changes. Given that this topic touches both personal finances and the health of aging family members, we take extra care to present balanced, well-sourced information — but nothing on this site replaces advice from a licensed insurance professional, financial advisor, or elder law attorney who knows your specific situation.

Who we are

SandwichGen Planning is run by a small team of researchers and writers focused on long-term care insurance and elder care planning. We don’t publish under individual bylines, but every piece of content goes through the same research and editorial process described above.

What we are not

We are not an insurance company, agent, or broker, and we don’t sell or underwrite long-term care insurance or any other policy. We are not a financial advisory firm, an elder law practice, or a medical provider. Our goal is to help you understand your options — costs, coverage, alternatives to traditional insurance — so you can make an informed decision together with the licensed professionals who handle the actual policy, plan, or care decision.
